Women's T&F Weekly Honors Go To Watkins, Hayhurst

ATLANTA - The SAA released the women's track & field Athletes of the Week for events competed last weekend and, following voting by the league head coaches, Abby Watkins of Rhodes won Track Athlete of the Week while Sarah Hayhurst of Centre captured Field Athlete of the Week.

SAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week - Abby Watkins of Rhodes

Abby Watkins (pictured at right) of Rhodes had a very impressive showing at the Rhodes 7-Way on Saturday. Watkins won the 1500 with a 5 second lifetime best of 4:45.53, then came back with about an hour of rest and also won the 800 with a time of 2:17.24. That time of 2:17.24 just missed her lifetime best of 2:17.08. She also ran a leg of the 4 X 4 at the end of the meet. She now ranks #2 in the SAA in the 1500 and now ranks #1 in the 800 by four seconds. 

SAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week - Sarah Hayhurst of Centre

With only two weeks of track & field competition under her belt, Centre's Sarah Hayhurst won her second consecutive collegiate pole vault event of the season.  Sarah finished first place in the pole vault at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, IN this past weekend against a field of very competitive jumpers.  Sarah jumped 11'10" to secure the win.  Sarah is currently ranked first on the SAA Performance List and 17th in the Country in Division III.

Other notable performances from around the league:

Hendrix freshman Irrianne Jones broke the three-year old school record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.55 seconds. She placed eighth at the Little Rock Open and the time is the fourth best in the conference.

Sewanee sophomore Meredith Stuber had a fantastic day at the Rhodes 7 Way Meet this past weekend.  She ran a personal best time in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.47, and had a second best time ever in the 200 meters.  In addition, Meredith anchored the 4x100 meter relay to their top time of the year.  Meredith also had personal bests in the high jump and javelin throw.

Payton Passantino, a freshman at Millsaps College had a great meet at the Rhodes 7-Way.  She placed first in the javelin with a throw of 37.62m which is also a new school record.  Payton is currently 2nd on the Performance List for the SAA.  Payton also placed 7th in the discus with a throw of 29.53m and 7th in the shot with a throw of 10.24m. 

Sewanee junior Karagan Day had a great performance at the Rhodes 7 Way Meet this past weekend.  She threw a 3 meter personal record of 35.95 in the javelin throw placing second and moving her into fourth on the SAA list.  Karagan also finished 6th in the triple jump, had a personal best in the high jump and ran her lifetime best in the 100 meter dash.
