Memphis, Tenn. (May 6, 2019) - Making its fifth consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, the Rhodes women's lacrosse team will travel to Bloomington, Ill. to face Hamline University in the first round of the championship.
The winner of the Saturday, May 11, 1:00 p.m. contest will play host Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Rhodes (13-3) is in the 42-team field as one of 31 automatic qualifiers, earning the Southern Athletic Association's (SAA) automatic bid after a 14-10 victory over Centre.
The Lynx, who have won 11 straight games, look to defeat Hamline and revenge a 19-16 loss in a neutral-site matchup at IWU earlier this year. Rhodes has won each of their last two NCAA opening rounds, defeating IWU, 16-10, in 2017 and Transylvania, 26-9, last season. In 2015, the Lynx defeated Meredith, 16-12, in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Hamline Pipers (18-1), who lost at Illinois Wesleyan in an NCAA tournament first-round game last season, is in the field for the third straight season, earning the automatic bid from the Midwest Lacrosse Conference. The Pipers enter the NCAA tournament on a seven-game winning streak.
Illinois Wesleyan (17-2) earned the second round opening contest after winning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's automatic bid into the tournament with an 11-6 win over Chicago. The Titans are making their third straight NCAA appearance riding a 12-game win streak.
The winner of Sunday's second round contest will meet the winner of the game between Franklin & Marshall (15-4) and Springfield (13-6). Regional competition will take place on May 18 and 19. The semifinals and national championship game will be played May 25 and 26 at Day Field in Richmond, Virginia.
