TEMPE, Ariz. (Jan. 18, 2018) - Announced Thursday afternoon by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the Sewanee men and women's tennis teams are ranked in the national and regional preseason polls.
The women's team enters the 2019 season ranked 12th, matching last season's final ranking.
Inside the Atlantic South, the Tigers are third, behind 2018 National Runner-Up Emory and Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).
Millsaps joins Sewanee in the region rankings from the Southern Athletic Association, coming in at 10th.
The women's program will play four ranked teams in 2019, including the top three teams in the nation: defending National Champion and top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.), No. 2 Emory and No. 3 Williams (Mass.). Sewanee will also play No. 15 Bowdoin. That number should rise based on opponents the Tigers will play at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Nashville March 1-3.
Sewanee finished the 2018 campaign with a 22-5 record en route to the team's sixth straight SAA Regular Season and Tournament Championship and 25th appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Tigers finished the season in the third round of the national championship.
The men's team enters 2019 with the same ranking from the final poll in 2018. The team will open the campaign ranked 23rd in the nation.
Announced earlier this year, Jack Gray enters the 2019 season ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region in singles play. The senior is coming off a 12-7 record in singles play en route to the SAA Player of the Year, the ITA Atlantic South Player to Watch and an appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship.
The Tigers will play nine opponents that are in the national rankings: No. 4 Emory, No. 8 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), No. 14 Kenyon (Ohio), No. 20 Mary Washington (Va.), No. 22 Tufts (Mass.), No. 25 Kalamazoo (Mich.) No. 27 Denison (Ohio), No. 37 Stevens (N.J.) and No. 38 Carleton (Minn.)
The Purple and Gold earned a 22-6 record last season as the program collected its sixth consecutive SAA Regular Season and Tournament Championship and the team's 16th appearance in the NCAA Championships.
The 2019 season opens on the road in Nicholasville, Ky. with matches against Transylvania (Ky.) and Hanover (Ind.) on Feb. 16.
