Fennelly, Yowan, Vaughn, and Gilbert headline All-SAA Men's Lacrosse awards

2018 All-SAA Men's Lacrosse Awards

ATLANTA (April 24, 2018) – The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) announced the 2018 All-SAA Men's Lacrosse awards, Tuesday. The award winners were selected exclusively by the league's head coaches.

Ryan Fennelly of Rhodes was named SAA Offensive Player of the Year. Steven Yowan, also of Rhodes, was named the SAA Defensive Player of the Year while Jake Vaughn of Sewanee captured the league's SAA Newcomer of the Year honor. Finally, Curtis Gilbert of Berry earned the league's SAA Coach of the Year award.

As the league's top offensive player, Fennelly finished with 25 goals and 19 assists for the Lynx. The Rhodes attacker ranked 11th in goals, fourth in assists, and 10th in shots. In conference action, Fennelly was even better. He led the league in total points with 24 and ranked second with 11 assists.

With that, Rhodes won its second straight SAA Regular Season championship and heads into the SAA Tournament Championship game with a 12-2 record.

On the opposite side of the field, Yowan led one of the top defenses in the SAA. Rhodes allowed the second-fewest goals in the league. They also ranked second in goals-against-average despite ranking fifth in saves. Individually, Yowan ranked 10th with 15 caused turnovers. He also ranked sixth in groundballs with 55 to go along with scoring seven times.

In his first season of collegiate lacrosse, Vaughn was outstanding. The Tiger freshman scored 22 goals and finished with eight assists. Vaughn scored in 13 of the Tigers' 15 contests. That includes his last seven matches.

Finally, Gilbert led the Vikings to a 12-4 overall record. Berry went 5-1 in the SAA regular season, finishing second only behind unbeaten Rhodes. The Vikings led the conference in goals (233), assists (124), goals-per-game (14.56), shots (705), shooting percentage (33.0), and clear percentage (88.2).

The Vikings also ranked in the top-three in goals against, goals-against-average, shots on goal, shots on goal percentage, man-down goals, and faceoff percentage.
