ATLANTA (Sept. 24, 2018) – The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced that Ceara Caffrey (Sewanee) and Maran Lee (Centre) have been named SAA Field Hockey Players of the Week.
Offense - Ceara Caffrey - Junior Forward - Sewanee
Caffrey had another phenomenal week for the Tigers. The junior recorded her second four-goal performance of her career in an 8-2 win over Converse. After scoring the first goal of the game in the eighth minute, Converse took the lead on back-to-back goals in the 11th and 20th minutes. Caffrey brought the Tigers back with back-to-back goals in about a minute and a half span. She also added a goal in the second half.
In Sunday's game against Bridgewater, the Tigers struggled to get shots off for most of the contest. Trailing 1-0 with 10:30 to go, Caffrey broke the shutout with the game-tying goal. After a nearly hour and a half lightning delay, the contest was forced to overtime. In the 79th minute, the Scituate, Mass. native scored the game-winner to help extend Sewanee's winning streak to six games.
On the season, Caffrey is leading the SAA in goals with 15, and she is on pace for the conference record of 22.
Defense - Maran Lee - Freshman Midfielder - Centre
In addition to playing stellar defense, Lee made Sunday a day to remember as she scored her first career collegiate goal. Lee's goal capped the scoring for the day as Centre improved to 3-2 on the year with a 9-2 win over Concordia on Sunday afternoon.
Defensively, Lee has led the Centre defense to the second-best goals-against average in the SAA.
