ATLANTA (Oct. 21, 2019) – The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced that Robert Shufford (Birmingham-Southern), Oliver Hunter (Centre), and Chris Stewart (Trinity) have been named SAA Football Player of the Week winners.
Offense - Robert Shufford - Junior Running Back - Birmingham-Southern
Shufford rushed for a game and career-high 238 yards in the Panthers' 28-15 upset of No. 7 Berry. This was the most single-game rushing yards by a Panther since 2012. He averaged 9.2 yards per rush, his longest at 69 yards, and finished with a touchdown.
Additionally, Shufford caught two passes for 23 yards and another touchdown. He leads the country in rush yards per game and is also the conference leader in five other categories.
Defense - Oliver Hunter - Sophomore Defensive Tackle - Centre
Hunter was a force in the middle for the Centre defense in their overtime win against Hendrix. Hunter racked up a career-high 11 tackles in the victory, including five solo tackles. In the final minute, with Hendrix facing first and goal from the two, Hunter stuffed the run on consecutive plays to help hold the Warriors to a field goal and force overtime. In the ensuing overtime period, the Colonels eventually prevailed.
Special Teams - Chris Stewart - Returner - Trinity
Stewart led Trinity to a 24-17 SAA road win over Millsaps, Saturday, tallying a game-best 157 all-purpose yards. Stewart finished with 66 yards on three punt returns and 69 yards on two kickoff returns, as well as adding 22 yards receiving to his stat line. After Millsaps took a 10-7 lead in the first half, Stewart returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to set up the go-ahead touchdown for the Tigers.
Then in the third quarter, he had a 33-yard punt return that set up Trinity's final score - a touchdown that proved to be the difference in the game.
