Led by its defense, No. 18 Berry rolls past Maryville for a 31-0 win in the NCAA playoffs

ROME, Ga. (Nov. 17, 2018) - For the second straight season, the No. 18 ranked Berry football team rolled past a USA South Champion in the NCAA Division III football playoffs. On Saturday at a packed Valhalla Stadium, the Vikings hammered Maryville 31-0.

After a slow start, Berry quarterback Heath Burchfield found Joey Connors for a 22-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Right before half, Berry took a 14-0 lead when Connors scored again on a one-yard run.

Out of halftime, Berry kept rolling. The Vikings scored three more times in the second half, once when Connors raced 74 yards for his third TD. Berry also got a 21-yard field goal from Trey Gregory and an 11-yard fumble recovery that was returned for a TD by Jordan Roman.

Overall, Berry's defense limited Maryville to 116 yards of total offense. The Vikings racked up 378 yards of offense with Connors accounting for 175 yards of total offense.

Berry advanced to the Second Round where they will travel to Mary-Hardin Baylor next Saturday.
