Sewanee Athletics teams up with local elementary school for Athlete Buddies

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 18, 2018) - Over 50 Sewanee student-athletes participated in a program called Athlete Buddies, supported by Sewanee Elementary School (SES).

In total, 64 student-athletes across 10 sports helped out at the elementary school this past semester in downtown Sewanee.

The program was started by assistant men's lacrosse coach Nick DiBernardo and Jalee Walters, one of the fifth-grade teachers at SES.

"When Nick and I approached the idea of Athlete Buddies, we did not expect it to reach almost 70 athletes in less than a year," said Walters. "It is rewarding to see the relationships that are being built among our Elementary students and University students. As a teacher, it is extremely gratifying to watch our students light up when their 'buddy' shows up to their classroom."

"On behalf of Sewanee Elementary School, we would like to thank the Sewanee Athletic Department and all the student-athletes who participated for volunteering their time in our community. We look forward to a new group of volunteers next semester."

Below is a video of five student-athletes who shared their experience: Grant Gilmore (Men's Lacrosse), Lakeisha Phillips (Women's Basketball), Chris McNulty (Baseball), Milly Etheridge (Field Hockey) and Letherio Jones (Football/Men's Track and Field).
