The Southern Athletic Association announced today that Joe Cunningham will serve as coordinator of women's basketball officials for the new league set to bein play in the fall of 2012.
Cunningham has served as a basketball official for over forty years and currently officiates on the staffs of ACC, SEC, Colonial, Southern, Big South, Sun Belt, Atlantic Sun and Ohio Valley conferences for women's hoops. In addition to the women's basketball officiating he has done, Cunningham also called Division II and III men's basketball games for twelve seasons.
Among many career accolades, Cunningham has officiated a Final Four and numerous NCAA Tournament and conference championship games. He was a women's basketball Naismith Award winner, has received the Commissioners Award from the Atlantic Coast Conference and was named Official-of-the-Year by the now defunct American Basketball League.
Cunningham resides in Eatonton, Ga. with his wife Kristy. He has two daughters, Stephanie Weller and Kelsi Cunningham, as well as two grandchildren, Taylor Dean and McKenzie Ray.
