SAA Announces 2012 Football All-Conference Award Winners

(ATLANTA, Ga.) –The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced the 2012 Football All-Conference award winners and, after exclusive voting conducted by the league's head coaches, quarterback Garrett Pinciotti of Millsaps was named Offensive Player of the Year, Millsaps' defensive lineman Zach Bell was named Defensive Player of the Year, Sewanee's linebacker Brandon Campbell claimed Newcomer of the Year status and Centre's kicker/punter Jordan Gay received Special Teams Player of the Year. Millsaps head coach Aaron Pelch received the Coach of the Year honor from his peers.

A total of 61 student-athletes earned recognition as either All-SAA First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention recipients.

Garrett Pinciotti, a senior quarterback from Hoover, Ala., guided the Majors to a 7-3 (3-1) overall record that included earning a share of the conference crown. He ranked first in the league in passing yards per game (272.9) and touchdowns (24) while also leading the way in total yards (2729) and completions (206) to easily earn the Offensive Player of the Year distinction.

Millsaps' Zach Bell, a sophomore defensive lineman from Metairie, La., wreaked havoc on the league as a game-changing pass rusher. He led the conference in sacks (8) and ranked second in sack yards (40). He also showed a nose for the ball by ranking seventh overall in tackles (68) and third-best is assists (37). Bell's game-changing ability was also on display as evidenced by his league-best 3 fumble recoveries en route to 2012 Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Brandon Campbell of Sewanee, a freshman linebacker from Conyers, Ga., earned Newcomer of the Year status by making an immediate impact on the field for the Tigers. The first-year player consistently made big plays, including 4.5 sacks on the season (fourth in SAA) and forcing three fumbles (tied for first in SAA). His immediate contributions earned him the 2012 Newcomer of the Year award and gives head coach Tommy Laurendine plenty to look forward to in the future.

Centre's Jordan Gay, a senior kicker / punter from Danville, Ky., handled all the kicking duties for the Colonels and easily established his Special Teams Player of the Year candidacy by winning the weekly Player of the Week award four times for his outstanding efforts. He connected on 8-of-17 field goal attempts, nailing a record-establishing 53 yarder against Millsaps. Additionally, he punted 46 times for 1846 yards and a 42.0 yard per punt average, pinning his opponents inside the 20-yard line 16 times on the season.

Aaron Pelch just completed his third season as head coach of the Majors and with an 18-12 career record, has consistently produced winning squads. His 2012 Majors team was no different as Millsaps rolled to a 7-3 overall mark and claimed a share of the inaugural SAA Regular Season Championship. Pelch spent time in the NFL prior to taking the head job at Millsaps, serving as assistant special teams coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2009.
