ATLANTA - The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) announced the 2015-16 SAA Man and Woman of the Year presented by Summit Management Corporation and Sewanee student-athletes Eric Roddy and Emily Javadi claimed the league's top awards.
The SAA Man and Woman of the Year presented by Summit Management Corporation are the highest honors the league bestows, and an event will be held on Sewanee's campus on June 13 to celebrate the recipients and their families. Roddy and Javadi are the fourth recipients of the prestigious honor and they each perfectly embody the spirit of the award with their incredible contributions to their respective campuses.
Senior Eric Roddy from Chattanooga, Tenn. is a rare student-athlete that perfectly encapsulates the character of the league's top honor. A double major in English and Spanish, Roddy is ranked as one of the top four in his graduating class with a 4.03 GPA. Additionally, he has served tirelessly over a four year period as a Bonner scholar performing community service in a neighboring poor rural county school system. On the tennis courts, he led his team to four straight SAA Championships while earning four All-SAA Men's Tennis First Team awards.
A Bonner Scholar - Bonner Leader for eight semesters, Roddy volunteered eight hours a week tutoring in the Grundy County School System as a college counselor.
He is currently ranked No. 2 in the country in doubles and No. 9 in the region in singles with a 25-3 doubles record and a 19-4 singles record that includes only one Division III loss this year. He will be a 2016 All-American as a result of his ITA Regional Doubles Championship and second place finish at the ITA National Championships. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships later in May.
Eric was a 2015 Rhodes Scholar finalist in St. Louis and traveled to Spain to study in the summer between his sophomore and junior years. Last year he interned in New York for Scout.com and writes a weekly blog for Scout on the Miami Dolphins. Additionally he writes regularly for Sewanee's local community paper as a guest columnist.
In a joint effort to honor the Southern Athletic Association's most elite student-athletes, Summit Management Corporation and the SAA partnered last fall to create the annual SAA Man and Woman of the Year. The awards, selected by a committee comprised of Summit Management and SAA representatives, are given to the senior class male and female nominees who best exemplify traits of leadership, character, athletic and academic success.
The criteria for SAA Man and Woman of the Year nominees included that they must be a senior with no eligibility remaining, they must have been named First Team All-SAA in the sport in which in the participated during their athletic careers, and they must have qualified for the SAA Academic Honor Roll during their tenure as a student-athlete. Additionally, SAA Man and Woman of the Year candidates are expected to be involved in their local community in some meaningful way.
